Words such as \u201ccoaching tools,\u201d \u201ccoaching techniques,\u201d or even the metaphor of the \u201ccoaching hat\u201d are often used to describe what coaches do. Yet, such expressions might subtly suggest that coaching is something we <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">wear<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> for a time \u2014 a function that can be put on or taken off depending on context. In this view, coaching becomes one role among many, interchangeable with consulting, mentoring, or advising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">However, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: bold;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">2025 ICF Core Competencies<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> bring a meaningful nuance. This philosophy arises from the coach\u2019s lived values, cultural context, and understanding of what it means to accompany another human being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">At the same time, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Competency 7.07<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> notes that a coach \u201cadjusts the coaching approach in response to the client\u2019s needs.\u201d While this may sound like the \u201cchanging hats\u201d metaphor, perhaps it actually points to something subtler: a movement within the coaching stance \u2014 a responsiveness that remains faithful to one\u2019s values and philosophy, rather than a departure from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">If coaching is indeed a philosophy of being, then it cannot simply be worn or removed at will. It may instead be something we inhabit \u2014 an orientation toward humanity, growth, and dialogue that infuses all our interactions. This article explores how understanding coaching as a philosophy rather than an approach may help us honor diversity among coaches while remaining anchored in shared ICF values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: bold;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Coaching as a Living Philosophy<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">To speak of \u201cone\u2019s coaching philosophy\u201d is to acknowledge both <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">common ground<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">plurality<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">. Within that shared ground, however, each coach may develop their own lived philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">A coach in Tokyo might draw from Zen and phenomenology; another in Oslo from existentialism and systems thinking; another in Nairobi from communal Ubuntu ethics. Each philosophy, though distinct, still arises from the same soil: a belief that human beings are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">creative, resourceful, and whole<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">This plurality does not weaken the profession\u2019s coherence \u2014 it enriches it. Coaching philosophy, in this sense, may not be a single doctrine but a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">phenomenological stance<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">: an ongoing inquiry into how we meet the Other. How does it appear in my tone, silence, or curiosity? Philosophy here is not abstraction \u2014 it might be the invisible atmosphere of the coaching relationship itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: bold;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">The Fragility of the \u201cCoaching Hat\u201d Metaphor<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">The familiar expression \u201cwearing the coaching hat\u201d often arises in organizational or hybrid roles where professionals shift between functions \u2014 manager, mentor, consultant, advisor, coach. On the surface, the metaphor may seem harmless, perhaps even useful, in teaching boundary awareness. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Competency 1.06<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> rightly asks us to \u201cmaintain distinctions between coaching, consulting, psychotherapy, and other support professions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Yet, phenomenologically speaking, the metaphor might conceal more than it reveals. A \u201chat\u201d is something external \u2014 it covers but does not transform. When we imagine coaching as a hat, we may unconsciously reduce it to a temporary behavior, detached from one\u2019s deeper philosophy or humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">We might then ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">What happens to the ICF core values when a coach \u201cchanges hats\u201d?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Can professionalism, equity, collaboration, and humanity be suspended and then reactivated at will?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">How can one shift between professional roles without fragmenting one\u2019s ethical and philosophical coherence?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">When a coach \u201cchanges hats,\u201d they might risk walking through <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">different value systems and boundaries<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> without full awareness. A consulting mindset may unconsciously reintroduce hierarchy; a therapeutic stance may emphasize healing rather than partnership. Each carries its own philosophy and ethics. Without reflection, the coach may oscillate between incompatible worldviews, leaving both self and client uncertain about the ground beneath them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;text-align: justify;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">The issue is not about having multiple competencies \u2014 many coaches are also consultants or therapists \u2014 but about whether these roles coexist within a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">continuous philosophy of being<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">.
