If you’ve ever gone on a date hoping this will be “the one,” you know how that energy feels—tense, performative, maybe even a little desperate. The same thing happens in a job search. Too many capable professionals approach interviews from a place of need instead of value.

When you believe you’re a strong candidate with something real to offer, everything shifts. You stop trying to impress and start evaluating—just like you would in a healthy dating relationship. You’re not just asking, “Will they hire me?” You’re also asking, “Is this a place where I’ll thrive?”

Research backs this up. Gallup found that employees who use their strengths every day are six times more likely to be engaged at work (Gallup, State of the American Workplace, 2016). That kind of engagement happens when your role and your environment align with who you are—not just what you can do.

So, treat interviews as conversations between equals. While the company is assessing whether you fit their needs, you’re also gathering information about whether they fit yours. Ask questions that reveal the culture beneath the surface:

  • “How does your team handle feedback or conflict?”
  • “Can you describe a recent project that went really well—and one that didn’t?”
  • “What does success look like in this role six months from now?”
  • “How do you support professional growth and development?”

And don’t ignore red flags. If leaders dodge questions about workload, growth, or culture—or if you feel more “sold to” than “listened to”—pay attention. The energy you sense now is often amplified once you’re inside the organization.

Remember: desperation clouds judgment. Confidence sharpens it. When you know your worth and lead with curiosity, you’re far more likely to find an employer who values your strengths and supports your success. A job search, like dating, is about alignment—not approval. You’re not auditioning; you’re choosing.
