The same thing happens in a job search. Too many capable professionals approach interviews from a place of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">need<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> instead of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">When you believe you\u2019re a strong candidate with something real to offer, everything shifts. You stop trying to impress and start evaluating\u2014just like you would in a healthy dating relationship. You\u2019re not just asking, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">\u201cWill they hire me?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> You\u2019re also asking, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">\u201cIs this a place where I\u2019ll thrive?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Research backs this up. Gallup found that employees who use their strengths every day are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: bold;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">six times more likely to be engaged at work<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> (Gallup, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: italic;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">State of the American Workplace,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> 2016). That kind of engagement happens when your role and your environment align with who you are\u2014not just what you can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">So, treat interviews as conversations between equals. While the company is assessing whether you fit their needs, you\u2019re also gathering information about whether they fit yours. Ask questions that reveal the culture beneath the surface:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent;color: #000000;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 11pt\">&#8220;How does your team handle feedback or conflict?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">\u201cCan you describe a recent project that went really well\u2014and one that didn\u2019t?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">\u201cWhat does success look like in this role six months from now?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.38\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">\u201cHow do you support professional growth and development?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">And don\u2019t ignore red flags. If leaders dodge questions about workload, growth, or culture\u2014or if you feel more \u201csold to\u201d than \u201clistened to\u201d\u2014pay attention. The energy you sense now is often amplified once you\u2019re inside the organization. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 12pt;margin-bottom: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Remember: desperation clouds judgment. Confidence sharpens it. When you know your worth and lead with curiosity, you\u2019re far more likely to find an employer who values your strengths and supports your success. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #000000;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">A job search, like dating, is about alignment\u2014not approval.
