Values & Coaching
In This Article:
- Part One: What values truly are
- Part Two: How values shape coaching
Part 1 — What Are Values?
Sometimes you make a choice… and a quiet discomfort sets in.
Sometimes you can’t quite decide what feels “right” or “wrong.”
And sometimes the path feels effortless — the right people, the right moments, everything flowing.
These moments are inner signs:
They show when we are honoring our values… or ignoring them.
Values are the essence of statements like:
• “This matters to me.”
• “I can’t do without this.”
• “This doesn’t sit right with me.”
They are the invisible compass guiding our lives.
Progress, creativity, clarity, honesty, friendship, independence, financial stability, personal growth…
The nature of values is beautifully captured in the following quotes:
Daniel Goleman
“When actions don’t align with values, the result is guilt, shame, deep anxiety, unsettling indecision, or regret. This inner discomfort can block or even sabotage our efforts.”
Laura Whitworth
“When a value is not honored, the client feels internal tension.
Humans are flexible — we can absorb huge amounts of misalignment and still keep going.
But the cost is high: a sense of having betrayed oneself.
And this feeling creates a life that is tolerated, not fulfilled.”
Daniel Goleman
“Our deep sense of right and wrong is a constant background signal.
Our emotions continuously show whether our choices align with our core values.”
So what does someone find in value-centered coaching?
This question takes us to Part Two
Goals, Values & Fulfillment
During my coaching training, one sentence came up again and again:
“Good coaching creates the space for a person to move consciously from point A to point B.”
Change. Growth. Learning. Transformation.
And when we explore goals, the first question often is:
“What do I want?”
A great question — but not a complete one.
The magic begins when we go deeper: “Which of my values is this goal connected to?”
In coaching, understanding the value behind a goal is essential.
Because meaningful, inspiring, sustainable goals always come from personal values.
Why Do Most of Us Struggle to Sustain Our Goals?
Because many goals… aren’t aligned with our true values.
For a goal to last, it needs to be anchored in the person’s inner compass — in their values.
Goal + Value = Inner Anchor
When this happens, the goal stops being a simple “to-do item”
and becomes a meaningful journey rooted in the person’s inner world.
And that’s where the transformation begins:
When someone sets goals aligned with their values…
• fulfillment increases
• meaning grows
• inner peace deepens
A person who knows their values has clarity when saying “yes” or “no.”
Their decisions feel solid — because their path is illuminated by something steady: Their own values.
If you’d like to explore your values, align your goals with them,
and build a life that feels more meaningful and grounded…
I’m just a call away. 🌿✨
