I love a certificate. I love the buzz of learning new things, and then the feeling of pride in someone else confirming I am capable. It’s how I ended up as a coach.

New stuff is fun. Learning is fun. The difficult part is having to do the work to show the learning – the coursework, the paperwork, the work towards exams and assessments. But that work can stop being enjoyable, and you can find that you really, really don’t want to do it.

I started my working life as a teacher (another certificate). I loved the buzz of seeing other people learning new things, and supporting them to show their capabilities. I have got hundreds of people through coursework and assessments that they really, really did not want to do. I have also got myself through coursework and assessments that I really, really did not want to do. What I discovered is that there is always a way to get back ahead, even when you think you’ve really, really had it.

It isn’t just qualifications. If you’ve said ‘yes’ to anything new, felt the buzz, and now want to back out, I can relate. Horribly. That book you said you would write.
