What is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as a thought-provoking and creative partnership that inspires clients to maximize their personal and professional potential, often unlocking previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.

Coaching is a transformative journey where you discover your true potential. What is coaching all about? Imagine driving on a road you’ve never traveled before. You’re in the driver’s seat, in control of the destination, but beside you is a trusted navigator — your coach — helping you see new possibilities, find alternate routes, and ensure you don’t lose focus. This partnership empowers you to unlock answers you already have within, while also challenging you to go further than you imagined.

The benefits of Coaching

At its heart, coaching is about exploration. It’s a process that stirs up creativity, fuels personal growth, and maximizes both professional and personal potential. Through powerful questioning and insightful dialogue, coaches support you in discovering your own solutions, whether for life decisions, career shifts, or business challenges. Coaching goes beyond surface-level improvements; it cultivates deep, lasting change.

By taking that first step to explore coaching principles with an ICF-credentialed coach, you set yourself on a path to personal empowerment and growth. Coaching isn’t just about reaching your goals — it’s about transforming how you think, live, and thrive.

Key Differences Between Coaching, Therapy, Consulting, and Mentorship

Coaching is often lumped in with therapy, consulting, and mentorship, but let’s clear the air  these approaches while overlapping in some ways, are distinct.

Coaching vs. Consulting

Consultants are like mechanics  they’re brought in to diagnose the problem, prescribe a solution, and sometimes even fix the issue for you. They’re experts in their field and can give you specific, actionable advice. Coaching flips the script. A coach doesn’t give you the answers; they ask you the questions to help you find the solutions for yourself. With coaching, your growth and strategies are sustainable and tailored to you.

Coaches and consultants can get you where you want to go faster, whether deployed individually or paired together.

Coaching vs. Therapy

Therapy is the space to heal, recover from past traumas, emotional pain, or dysfunctional patterns. Therapists focus on improving mental health and giving you tools to navigate life’s challenges. Coaching is often future-oriented. It’s about growth and taking action towards specific goals. Therapy often focuses on “why, coaching focuses on “what’ and “how.”

Both therapy and coaching have their strengths. In some cases, a coach may step back if therapy is more appropriate.

Coaching vs. Mentoring

Mentoring is like having an experienced guide on a wellworn path. A mentor shares their hardlearned wisdom, advice, encouragement, and lessons from their own journey to help you develop over time. It’s a longterm relationship focused on growth related to the mentor’s personal and professional experience.

Coaching is your personal strategy session. Rather than giving advice or sharing their experiences, a coach helps you discover your strengths, set clear goals, and create your own roadmap to success. If you’re looking for specific strategies or shortcuts based on someone else’s experience  say to break into a new career or industry  a mentor might be your best bet. They can illuminate your path by sharing what worked (and what didn’t) on their journey.
