The International Coaching Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics is the professional framework that guides coaches in behaving responsibly, ethically, and with integrity. Its core purpose is to ensure that coaching relationships are built on trust, respect, transparency, accountability, and professionalism.

At its heart, the Code expects coaches to:

  • Act with integrity and honesty in all professional interactions
  • Maintain confidentiality and protect client information
  • Respect client autonomy, allowing clients to make their own decisions and take ownership of outcomes
  • Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any situations that could impair objectivity
  • Demonstrate professional competence through continuous learning and self-development
  • Embrace diversity, inclusion, and fairness in interactions with all stakeholders
  • Comply with applicable laws and regulations while taking responsibility for their decisions and actions

Purpose of the Code

The ICF Code of Ethics serves four main purposes:

  1. Sets clear standards of professional conduct for coaches and others within the ICF ecosystem
  2. Guides ethical decision-making when coaches face dilemmas, ambiguity, or difficult situations
  3. Protects the integrity and credibility of both the coaching profession and the ICF
  4. Provides accountability, including a process for reviewing and addressing ethical concerns
