A catchy commercial poses the question “What’s in your wallet?” As a life coach, my question for you is “What’s in your library?” Yes, your physical or virtual library and, most importantly, the one within you—your internal library. This collection and your ability to use it, impacts how and when you will live with ease.

You’ve been acquiring information for your internal library all of your life. What are the contents? Who authored it? How does it impact you? When does soothe you? When does it stress you? When does it make you feel a particular way? On the whole, how well does it serve you?

It’s a growing multimedia library. It is quite elaborate and you use it all of the time. It is songs in your head, words people said, clips from youtube, movies, television, tik tok, and your lived experiences. The smell of an orange. Yes, scents are in there too! So are tastes—take a moment to recall vanilla. Vanilla will bring you a whole bunch of thoughts and feelings and memories of cakes, cupcakes, frosting, cookies, ice cream, candles, perfumes, and that is not all. Just like off-track web search results you may find yourself remembering a rap star from decades ago, or a means of describing something that is bland or standard. These aren’t the taste of vanilla!

Which resources guide you as you go about your life? It is your own thinking? Is it a person who raised you? A teacher? A preacher? A sports coach? A friend? A mentor? An author of a book you have read? The work of a screenwriter? Who? What? Is this information accurate, current, and relevant? Does it center around your best interests or does it work in favor of someone else’s agenda? Does it help you to live with ease or does it throw more challenges your way?

To live with ease is to be aware of what is in your internal library, to view these materials as resources, and to discern what best supports you in any given situation. So… what’s in your library?
